A matte top coat is the cheapest way to make a manicure look deliberate. It also changes how colour behaves: the same burgundy reads deeper and quieter without shine.
The most useful trick is alternating matte and gloss — the same shade on every nail, the finish doing the contrast. Negative space works particularly well this way.
