Two decisions, not one
A lash set is described by two things that people constantly conflate: the map, which decides the shape drawn around the eye, and the volume, which decides how dense it looks. A cat eye in classic and a cat eye in mega volume are barely the same photograph. Here they are separate choices, so you can see which one you were actually reacting to.

Photograph your eyes close up in daylight, looking straight at the camera, without mascara. A technician can only work with the natural lashes you have — their length, thickness and how many are in a growth phase — so bring the preview as a description of the effect you want and let them tell you which volume your lashes will carry.
Living with a set
Extensions shed with your own lashes, which means a set looks its best for about two weeks and needs a fill roughly every three. Heavier volumes are not simply more dramatic — they are more upkeep, more careful washing and more noticeable when they start to gap. Choosing a volume is choosing how much of your week you want to spend on your eyes, and the honest version of that question is easier to answer when you can see the difference side by side.
Glasses, and other things nobody mentions
Long lashes brush the lenses of glasses, which is why many people who wear them settle a volume lower than they first wanted. Sleeping position flattens one side over time. Mascara on top of extensions shortens their life considerably. A preview cannot tell you any of this, but knowing it changes which preview you should be looking at.
